Texas Tech unveils new name, logo design for stadium

Texas Tech's football stadium officially was renamed Jones AT&T Stadium during an announcement Wednesday at the stadium club. A new logo design of the stadium was also launched on the occasion.

The name change reflects SBC Communications' 2005 acquisition of AT&T and its decision to keep the AT&T name. The stadium had been called Jones SBC Stadium since 2000 in recognition of a $20 million gift from the former Baby Bell. The then-SBC Foundation also donated $10 million to Tech in 1999 for scholarships and endowed chairs.

"This partnership is great for the company, great for Texas Tech University and great for the Lubbock community,'' Tech President Jon Whitmore told an audience that included Tech regents and administrators, City Council and Chamber of Commerce members and AT&T officials. "Thanks to AT&T, we're stronger academically and we're more competitive and stronger in Big 12 athletics.''
