City of Sandy Springs Finally Gets a Logo Design

In January, weeks after the city was born, Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos announced a logo contest. Out of 60 or so entries, none made the cut.
Galambos was looking, she said, "for something that says Sandy Springs" but what she received was "just...too fancy,"
The city "wanted a lot," said Jim Polak, creative director for Atlanta-based JP Design + Communications, which was hired to step in where the residents failed. "They wanted to show the nature of Sandy Springs, the river, if possible, diversity, a sense of freedom ... but they also wanted it in a very concise symbol."
After informal talks with residents and interviews with city officials, Polak arrived at the council's May work session with eight concepts. A few choruses of "we don't like that one," and "move on" followed.
Polak returned to a recent council work session with three versions of each of the council's finalists. The council and Galambos finally agreed on one. It doesn't have a concise symbol, and the sense of freedom is not quite apparent. But a river does run through it.
The logo is "pointing us in the direction we want to go," Galambos said in an e-mail to the AJC. "We want to be green, we want to preserve our environment, and we want our new development to be modern, uncluttered and attractive." Residents can soon expect to see the logo on letterhead, maintenance trucks — and on 43 city limit signs that have been on hold since the winter, awaiting an acceptable logo.
